Boy Harsher: Get Mean, a sixth album written after the duo's breakup

Boy Harsher's sixth album, Get Mean, came out on 18 September 2026 on the duo's own label, licensed through Atlantic Recording Corp. The previous five were recorded while Jae Mathews and August Muller were a couple. That is no longer the case: only the professional relationship remains, and the record revolves around the breakup and its aftermath.

The duo describes it as an album about love, loss and survival, with a movement toward renewal. Jae Mathews handles vocals and lyrics, August Muller production, synths, sequencers and drum machines. Two tracks were shared ahead of release: “Jeans” and “Get Mean”.

The twelve tracks range from old-school-inspired synthpop (“Faulty”) to danceable minimalism (“Hard Beat”), with “Ice Pick” closer to a guitar-driven song. The reviewer at Reflections of Darkness hears a New Order-like mood on “Coming Home” and regrets that the vocals are sometimes buried in the mix. He also finds the album danceable and gives it 8 out of 10, while noting that it took him longer to get into than the previous ones.

Protomartyr sets its seventh album, Hotel Usona, in a lobby atmosphere

On Hotel Usona, its seventh album, released on Domino, Protomartyr opts for a more measured post-punk. The piano dominates, supported by keyboard pads, and the whole evokes, according to the Orkus reviewer, a Sunday morning in a hotel lobby.

Distorted guitars only surface occasionally, but to good effect, as on “Exalted Eagles”. Joe Casey’s vocals, at times edgy, suggest that something is simmering beneath the surface.

The record avoids the obvious and, by the band’s own admission, asks listeners to make the effort to get into it, preferably on headphones. The review is by Marc Halupczok, and the magazine’s October/November issue includes an interview with the band.

La Chanson Noire unveils the video for Grand Mal, shot in Paris

The goth and darkwave project La Chanson Noire put the official video for its new single, “Grand Mal”, online on 1 October. The track will be released digitally on 1 November 2026 on Violeta Exótica. It is the project’s first single since “Missa Negra”, released in 2024.

Charles Sangnoir, who leads La Chanson Noire with a changing cast of guest musicians, produced the track at Studio Vitruve in Paris. The video was shot in the same city, with Vanda Spengler and Emile Gontard in front of and behind the camera.

Sangnoir launched the project in 2007, blending cabaret, punk, post-punk, rock and opera into a theatrical sound. The current members are Sangnoir and Pedro Almeida. Violeta Exótica has released the band’s work since “Cruz Credo” in 2020.

CrAwE explores the ley lines of East Anglia with Torc Bound Ley Lines, on Triple Moon Records

CrAwE released the album “Torc Bound Ley Lines (Music For Flat Horizons And Celestial Shires)” on 8 October 2026 on Triple Moon Records, a French label founded in 2014. The project is that of Adam Colman, based in Norwich, who works alone with guitars, effects pedals and electronics to compose entirely instrumental dark ambient and drone pieces.

The nine tracks are built on processed guitar drones. Their titles draw on the places and folklore of East Anglia: a Norfolk wormhole, the Iceni goddess Andraste, the A47 bypass, or a Tesco in Downham Market, alongside references to ley lines and an equinox ritual. The label describes the sound as moving between deep audio, guitar drones and cinematic dark ambient.

Colman previously released “AlgorithmicEthics”, a CD of about 58 minutes limited to 42 copies, and “PrimalStar”, a 3-inch mini CD also limited to 42 copies, on Inner Demons Records. The album is available digitally on Bandcamp.

Cabinet of Curiosities

Nick Micho publishes the third volume of Blackrose Saga, Lord Daphasu, in dark fantasy

Nick Micho, a writer and illustrator known for the horror series Les Chroniques du Grimoire Noir, is preparing the third volume of Blackrose Saga, subtitled Lord Daphasu. Éditions Sawin publishes this dark fantasy series, which marks a change of register for the author, away from the pure horror of his earlier books.

The universe rests on a mythology populated by deities and monsters, with armed conflicts, a quest for ancient artifacts and the influence of a mysterious chaos energy. This volume goes back to the origins of this world, brings back characters from the previous volumes and introduces new ones. Micho’s usual darkness takes on a more epic scale here.

According to the Horreur Québec article, the book was being crowdfunded on Ulule, at 94% of its goal, with a few pre-orders still missing to start printing. There are several tiers, including the purchase of the whole series. One tier also lets a backer lend their features to a character in the fourth volume. Volume 4 of Les Chroniques du Grimoire Noir, La Sorcière Rouge, is already available.

Vermines, Sébastien Vaniček's spider horror film, back on TV

Écran Large has put its review of Vermines back in the spotlight for the film’s TV broadcast on 11 October. Released in 2023, it is Sébastien Vaniček’s first feature, co-written with Florent Bernard. The cast includes Théo Christine, Sofia Lesaffre, Lisa Nyarko, Jérôme Niel and Finnegan Oldfield.

The premise fits in a sentence: an apartment block overrun by killer spiders, where a group of friends looks for a way out. Geoffrey Crété sees a frontal horror film that genuinely wants to scare and stands apart from much of French genre cinema. He compares it to the pharmacy scene in The Mist more than to classics like Tarantula or Arachnophobia, and notes that the spiders multiply too fast to give the humans a chance.

The film is also about the people who live in this suburban building: the “vermin” of the title also refers to the residents, as seen by law enforcement. The critic points to the echo with La Tour by Guillaume Nicloux, another 2023 film in a similar setting, but its opposite in how it looks at its characters. In Vaniček’s film, the main character is driven by curiosity and respect for the spiders, which matters in the outcome.
