ghostbells releases the video for Phantoms

Out of Line has put online the official video for Phantoms, a track by ghostbells.

Words and music are by Jim Finley and Jessica Perry. Jim Finley produced the track, and the duo also directed the video. The lyrics revolve around haunting and a love that survives death: a rose left on a grave, ghosts dancing as evening falls.

The band is on tour: they play the Haltom Theatre in Fort Worth (October 29), the Scout Bar in Houston (October 30), New World Tampa (November 13) and Las Rosas in Miami (November 14), then Germany, at the Plage Noir Festival in Wangels (November 20 and 21) and the Obsidian Echoes Festival in Essen (November 28).

Doors in the Labyrinth: Waiting For the Dawn, a darkwave and neofolk EP from Pittsburgh

Doors in the Labyrinth is the project of Josh Loughrey, based in Pittsburgh. His EP Waiting For the Dawn, self-released on May 25, 2026, falls under darkwave, goth and neofolk.

ReGen Magazine hears dark synths, heavy drums and vocals veiled in sadness. The record combines neofolk elements in the vein of Death in June with sweeping synth pads and acid bass lines. The title track Waiting For the Dawn is the liveliest, with a synthpop lead and flanger-treated guitars. Until the Morning Comes recalls Lycia, while What the Fox Knew plays on thick pads and distorted sounds.

Tracklist: Waiting For the Dawn, Until the Morning Comes, The Labyrinth Scry, What the Fox Knew, Waiting For the Dawn [Video Edit].

Alas De Liona releases Noble Rot and puts together her gothic Halloween playlist

Alas De Liona, now based in Scotland, releases her new album Noble Rot. The record is a fast-paced, cinematic drama, fed by 1980s pop and post-punk, with dense lyrics and strong vampire symbolism. Gothic rock is her register.

For Halloween, she compiled for God Is In The TV a playlist of gothic songs she loves: “Cry Little Sister” by Gerard McMann, “I Put a Spell on You” by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, “Laymelli” by Agnes Obel, “Lobo-hombre en Paris” by La Unión, “The Marble Eye” by Anna von Hausswolff or “Season of the Witch” by Donovan.

The list closes with her own single “Hunter I”, which she describes as dark, ethereal and danceable. In it she uses vampire imagery to speak of the alienation and confinement of a woman who cannot manage to tell those around her about her turmoil.

Dan Mangan says goodbye to America with the single Goodbye, America

Dan Mangan is releasing a new single, Goodbye, America, as the election season gets under way in the United States.

The Canadian artist explains it as a Canadian: watching the United States come apart from the inside reminds him of caring for a loved one at the end of their life. He compares it to the decline of someone dear who is drinking themselves to death. The song may sound scathing, he points out, but he describes it as a love letter.

For Mangan, the country has not disappeared and he is not turning his back on it. It is the dominant American myth that no longer holds up. He borrows the image of “the sunken place” from the film Get Out: many sensible Americans, he suggests, have retreated there, and millions of people are screaming in it, wondering how this was allowed to happen.

Peak Flow unveils Never Coming Down, a black-and-white video in a cemetery

Doncaster duo Peak Flow release the single “Never Coming Down” on October 30, 2026, accompanied by a video. The track, written by the two musicians, tells of the beginnings of a romantic relationship, when surrender seems irresistible and the protective instinct grows more and more insistent.

Heavy guitars open the track over a pulsing bass, with brighter new wave synths in counterpoint. The chorus blends gothic rock, post-punk and darkwave, over a guitar backdrop drawn from shoegaze and alternative rock. The band calls this combination “Anthemwave”.

The black-and-white video unfolds among gravestones, bare branches, old brick walls and dark interiors. Outdoor guitar passages alternate with blurred images of trees and with silhouettes.

Obychno Odyn opens Адинамия with Погибель, a video against a power that sacrifices its own

Turin-based coldwave and post-punk project Obychno Odyn releases a video for “Погибель” (“Doom”), the opening track of its new album Адинамия. Ukrainian musician Vadym Protsenko describes a power that appropriates everything and is ready to sacrifice those it holds under its sway. The lyrics are in Russian.

A snare with echo sets an irregular rhythm beneath a high, looping guitar melody. A second, more spectral line brings the whole closer to gothic rock. The voice is bathed in reverb.

In the video, Protsenko sings facing the camera near barred windows, sometimes into a megaphone. Guitar and bass are played under the yellow light of a street lamp. Grainy black-and-white passages, stone statues and green bands of interference cut into the performance.

Protsenko founded Obychno Odyn in Bucharest in 2025. He writes in Russian and English, with 1980s French coldwave as an influence, notably Trop Tard and Bunker Strasse. A first album, Излияние, came out in 2026. On stage, bassist Marcello Aloisio accompanies him.

Flower Face announces the album Kill the Muse and unveils the video for Better the Devil

Montreal's Flower Face, real name Ruby McKinnon, announces her new album Kill the Muse, due February 5 on Nettwerk. She simultaneously presents “Better the Devil”, the second single, with a video. The first single, “Bad Dream”, came out in August. The artist works in a goth dream-pop register.

“Better the Devil” rests on a guitar of nervous arpeggios that gives way to strings and a saturated bass. The track evokes the inertia of bad habits when everyone around has moved on. McKinnon wrote it alone, in her studio, on a winter evening, and it is one of the album's first tracks. She says she kept parts of the original demo, for their frankness.

Kill the Muse follows Girl Prometheus, released in 2024. McKinnon says she refuses on it to let the dark side of her writing define her, and wants to learn to write when she is doing better too.

Mute and Threshold House are reissuing “Gold is the Metal (With the Broadest Shoulders)” by Coil, remastered, digitally since October 30, 2026. The vinyl and CD editions follow on November 20. The record is the first of four early albums by the group to be reissued, with restored artwork, previously unseen images and new liner notes.

A video accompanies the release: “Cardinal Points”. It is edited from footage of John Balance, Peter Christopherson and Stephen Thrower shot in 1988 by René van der Eijk for the programme “Sound of Progress”, directed by Alexander Oey and edited by Ossian Brown and Davide Pepe.

The album, released in 1987 as the first record on the Threshold House label, closes a trilogy begun with “Scatology” and “Horse Rotorvator”. It gathers material set aside during the making of the latter. Thrower, who wrote the liner notes, sees it as the close of a “magnum opus”. The collage includes a brass band recorded in Mexico and a Thai boxing gym captured by Christopherson; on “Metal in the Head”, a rented Fairlight sampler goes haywire in the middle of recording.

The series will continue with the music for Derek Jarman's “The Angelic Conversation”, the unreleased recordings for Clive Barker's “Hellraiser” and the compilation “Unnatural History”.

Implant releases The Kinematics Of Doubt, its fifteenth album, thirty years after its debut

Belgian EBM project Implant releases The Kinematics Of Doubt, its fifteenth studio album, on Alfa Matrix. Len Lemeire launched the project thirty years ago. The record has fourteen tracks and comes out on CD and digitally. It is also offered in a bundle of three with the new albums by Llumen and C-Lekktor.

The title borrows its term from physics: kinematics describes motion without concern for the forces that cause it. According to the label, the record treats doubt as a movement rather than a hesitation, through songs about control, surveillance, obsession and identity.

The single “Underneath The Neon Lights” carries the album's danceable side, while “I'm Only Happy When You Bleed” rests on a three-beat rhythm. “Pills”, “Framed” and “Sanity” are more direct EBM tracks, set against the slower “Civilization”, “Talking In Your Sleep” and the closing “Wounds”.

This record follows the trilogy The Chaos Machines, which closed in February 2025 with “Judging Sinners”.

Elke Sommer, the heroine of Lisa et le Diable, has died

German actress Elke Sommer died on October 28, 2026. For many fans of fantasy and horror cinema, she remains the Lisa of Mario Bava’s Lisa et le Diable.

Born Elke Schletz in Berlin in 1940, she moved to London at 17 as an au pair, then went to Italy, where she was elected Miss Viareggio. Spotted by Vittorio De Sica, she worked notably with Lucio Fulci and Pietro Francisci, then in Hollywood: in 1963 she starred opposite Paul Newman in Pas de Lauriers pour les Tueurs, then in Quand l'Inspecteur s'emmêle, with Peter Sellers.

Her entry into the fantastic genre dates from 1972 with Bava’s Baron Vampire, in which she plays Eva. Bava then gave her the lead role in Lisa et le Diable. She later appeared in L'Etrangleur Invisible, Hors de Contrôle and the German slasher Flashback, before devoting herself to painting.

The Butcher of Nazareth: David Scott Hay delivers a biblical horror novel from Black Crow Books

In The Butcher of Nazareth, a butcher has lost his son in the massacre ordered by Herod. Years later, haunted by visions of the future, he sets out to find the one child who escaped the slaughter, intending to kill him. In Nazareth he finds a man who is still waiting for his Calling.

David Scott Hay's novel, classed as literary horror and biblical horror, deals with faith, grief, fathers and sons, and violence committed in the name of belief. Mariana Enriquez, A.C. Wise and Jo Kaplan are among the authors who have praised it. Mariana Enriquez sees it as a provocative book that offers no easy answers.

This edition is published by Black Crow Books, a horror press run by Jamie-Lee Nardone and Matt Holland. Nardone made her name in genre publicity with Black Crow PR, while Holland founded The Broken Binding, a special-edition publisher and bookshop. The catalogue announces a few new titles each year.

Lisa Morton traces the history of mid-20th-century Halloween graphics

In a piece published by the Horror Writers Association, Lisa Morton reviews the images that shaped Halloween's visual identity, with a preference for those produced around the middle of the 20th century. Orange pumpkins, witches on broomsticks and black cats with round eyes are the recurring motifs.

She starts with postcards: around 3,000 different Halloween designs circulated between 1910 and 1925. Several were painted by artists such as Ellen Clapsaddle or Bernhardt Wall, with pumpkins sporting human faces and cackling witches.

In the 1950s, the postcard declined as children's door-to-door trick-or-treating grew. Metal noisemakers with orange, green and black designs and illustrated candy bags took over. Dennison's and Beistles produced paper decorations throughout the century, some still reissued today. Dennison's also published the “Bogie Books” from 1909 to 1926. Advertisements from candy makers, in magazines and in stores, round out this body of material, now sought after by collectors, with prices reaching hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Lisa Morton notes that these styles are coming back at retailers: Spirit Halloween has launched retro masks and Target has sold molded decorations inspired by the 1960s.

Strange: Junji Ito's Tales for Sleepless Nights is a TV Tokyo series that adapts 13 Junji Ito stories in live action, built around Lovesickness, including The Bully and Used Records. Broadcast in Japan, it is available on HBO Max with a new episode every week.

Three directors share the series. Yûta Shimotsu chose The Face Thief and The Bully, which he directed. He kept the manga next to the monitors to reproduce the final image of The Bully.

Junji Ito praises the choice of Yôko Maki for that role. For The Face Thief, the episode changes the ending and adds the theme of two friendships. According to the author, the story gains depth compared to the original, in which relationships are ice cold.
