Unter Null gathers its 2000s work in The Rise From Ruin, a 34-track double CD

Unter Null is putting its early catalogue back into circulation with The Rise From Ruin (and the Ritual of Becoming) - Deluxe Edition, a double CD released this summer. The project was founded in Seattle in 1998 by American musician Erica Dunham, one of the few women to have established themselves in cyber electro and aggrotech.

The set collects the album The Failure Epiphany, released in 2005 on the Belgian label Alfa Matrix, the Sick Fuck EP (2005) and tracks from the Sacrament EP and the Absolution EP (2006). It adds remixes by Noisuf-X vs. X-Fusion, Manufactura, T3chnophobia, Aslan Faction, Grendel, KiEw, Terrorfakt and C-Drone-Defect, for 34 tracks in total.

Sick Fuck, also released as a single, had become a cult track on European electro dancefloors. Erica Dunham put Unter Null on hold after 2010 to work as a sous-chef, then cared for a sick mother. Dunham's return to music produced two EPs, Coming Up To Breathe and You Made a Monster, released digitally by Alfa Matrix.

Crá Croí, Irish duo from County Cork, announces debut album Tá Brón Orm

Crá Croí comes from County Cork, Ireland. The name of the duo, made up of RG and CD, means “torment of the soul” or “heartache”. Its debut album, Tá Brón Orm, is due on 30 October 2026.

Their music sits between post-punk, new wave, gothic and dark wave: ominous synthesizers and driving rhythms meet atmospheric guitars and melodic, fatalistic-tinged vocals. The duo claims an independent, DIY approach.

Orkus cites Grave Pleasures, The Sisters of Mercy, The Cult and Héroes del Silencio as reference points for anyone who enjoys those bands. A video for the song Just Another Day is available.

PLATRONiC releases The Emperor's New Clothes, three remixes of Fortress of Fools

PLATRONiC released The Emperor's New Clothes on 16 October, a maxi-single of three remixes of Fortress of Fools. It is available digitally on Bandcamp and on streaming platforms.

Swede Andreas Svensson, aka On Moral Ends, and Finnish producer Imppu contribute their dark electro and synthpop versions. The third is PLATRONiC's own, which accentuates the track's gothic and medieval atmospheres.

Fortress of Fools, released on 20 March, was composed and produced by Some-E (Sami) Jumppanen, with influences such as VNV Nation, Propaganda, Erasure and Anne Clark. Vocalist Kay Burden wrote the lyrics, inspired by Andersen's fairy tales, notably “The Emperor's New Clothes”. A video for the original version, shot and produced by the duo, with post-production effects by Asko Lintunen, accompanies the release.

Finnish musician Jumppanen and German musician Burden met on Instagram in 2019. They founded PLATRONiC on 24 February 2020, EBM day (242).

LORNING covers The Cure's Primary in a darkwave and gothic rock version

The German band LORNING has released a cover of The Cure's Primary, out on 16 October on Danse Macabre Records. The song was the only single from the album Faith (1981). The cover was premiered by Post-Punk.com.

LORNING offers a fuller version than the original: ominous synthesizers, a thick bassline that picks up the original movement, a forward snare, a blunt guitar riff and icy synthesizer pads. According to Post-Punk.com, Christopher Heinze's voice recalls Peter Murphy's high register.

Heinze is also a drummer, notably with Die Art, Beringsee, Goldeck and The Russian Doctors. The band is completed by Thomas Gumprecht (guitar), Rajko Gohlke (bass), Tobias Herrmann (synthesizer) and Konrad Ruda (samples and effects). Its album Other Void / Other Rooms came out on Danse Macabre Records in June 2025. Their music blends NDW, electro-punk, EBM and industrial influences.

Rue Oberkampf films Darkness on the shores of Lake Arbersee

Munich darkwave duo Rue Oberkampf, made up of Julia de Jouy and Oliver Maier, has unveiled the video for Darkness, a single from the album Wehmut. The six-track album came out on 15 October on Young and Cold Records.

The record moves away from the harder electronic arrangements that earned the duo its international reputation and brings in dark folk and acoustic instruments. It grew out of long walks in the Bavarian forest and a solo trip aboard a container ship. According to the band, “Wehmut” does not exist in English: the word describes a feeling between melancholy and nostalgia.

On Darkness, the acoustic guitar of Josip Tijan, of the band THYMIAN, enters the Rue Oberkampf vocabulary for the first time. It sits alongside synthesizers and recordings made in the forest. At the heart of the track, the lyrics read: “Let the woods protect you / We will be fine / I'm here with you”.

The video, directed by Jojo and Daniel Kilgus, was shot at Lake Arbersee in the Bavarian forest. Filming began at four in the morning to capture the sun breaking through the mist.

Echoes of the pioneers

Muzikalia

Joy Division: Eternal (Live) gathers 16 concerts on 14 CDs

Eternal (Live) is the first official collection devoted solely to Joy Division's concerts. It runs to 14 CDs and brings together the audio of 16 concerts, including two previously unreleased performances recorded at the Hope & Anchor and at Acklam Hall in London, and three recordings never published before from the Factory, the Lyceum and the Moonlight Club.

The band's last concert before the death of Ian Curtis is included: High Hall, Birmingham, 1980. It is the only surviving live performance of “Ceremony”, which later became New Order's first single.

Muzikalia sees a band that keeps the urgency of punk in early 1979, before the release of Unknown Pleasures. At the Hope & Anchor, on 1 March 1979, “Leaders of Men”, “Shadowplay” and “Warsaw” sound rougher than their studio versions. The outlet notes that some tapes, taken from bootleg audience recordings, are of poor quality, and judges the box set better suited to those who already know the band.

Nachtschleife tackles psychological distress with Suizid, ahead of the album Systemabfall

Swiss dark wave project Nachtschleife released the digital single Suizid on Echozone on 16 October 2026. It is the first release from the upcoming album Systemabfall. The track runs 4 minutes 14 and blends dark wave, dark electro and industrial textures with expressive vocals.

The song deals with psychological distress, despair and loneliness. It offers no easy answer: it shows the moment when a person no longer sees a way out. The band presents it as a call to pay attention to people in crisis, addressed to those affected as much as to those around them. Systemabfall centres on a society where people must keep functioning despite their mental limits. An official animated video is available on YouTube.

Based in Geuensee, Nachtschleife brings together Stephanie Abromeit (also known for Beffibelle), Bernd Abromeit (Tonschleifer) and Ulf Müller, previously active in Projekt Ich, The Grab Society, SMOTCH, M.U.N.T Connection, Tränenwelten and U.M. Fiedel. The trio came together by chance on 1 April 2026 out of collective remixes. Its first single, Microgram, came out on 17 July 2026 on Echozone.

Hostia Pedagógica takes aim at the “Homo lamentabilis” on its debut post-punk album

Catalan trio Hostia Pedagógica, from Barcelona, is releasing its debut album, Homo Lamentáblis. The lineup is Xavier “Java” Javaloyas (guitar and vocals), Brian San Onofre (drums and backing vocals) and Jordi Iglesias (bass and backing vocals). In Spanish, the band's name refers to the educational slap once given to an unruly child.

The record takes aim at the “Homo lamentabilis”, those poorly informed internet users who clutter social networks, and the ballot boxes. It opens with Nativo de turno, which begins with a fake mic check before turning into a call to check the facts. Irony in the face of populist excesses and disinformation is the common thread, with sharp guitar riffs and a punk beat.

According to OndaRock, the proposition is not original: it recalls The Fall, The Damned, Idles and Viagra Boys, but the trio uses it effectively. The outlet also notes a resemblance to CCCP on Altas Capacidades. At home, Abajo con el trabajo and Estás roto are already minor punk classics, and Vendo manual is probably the track meant to set live shows on fire.

Stefano Guzzetti pays tribute to This Mortal Coil and 4AD with In A Strange Place

Pianist Stefano Guzzetti, from Cagliari, whose music falls under dark neoclassical, releases In A Strange Place. The album pays tribute to Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of This Mortal Coil, and to 4AD. It takes up the method of that project, which drew on the repertoire of other artists.

Guzzetti has surrounded himself with figures from the 4AD family: Emma Anderson (Lush), Dominic Appleton (Breathless, This Mortal Coil), Heidi Berry, Paula Frazer (Tarnation) and Ian Masters (Pale Saints). Anne Garner sings Northern Sky by Nick Drake, Appleton covers I Hear Only Silence Now by David J and Don't You Go by John Martyn, and Paula Frazer contributes What Is And Was.

The record sticks to piano, strings and a few electronic touches, in a register less gothic than its model and more intimate. It opens with Shelter, where children's voices give way to the sound of war, and closes with a traditional Maori chant recorded during Guzzetti's honeymoon. OndaRock sees in it one of the most evocative works of this end of the year.

Chloé Saint-Liphard, singer of Collection d'Arnell-Andréa, has died

Chloé Saint-Liphard, singer of Collection d'Arnell-Andréa, died on 15 October. The news was announced by VerdamMnis Magazine.

Her voice first appeared in 1987 on a self-released new wave single, Quel scandale !, under the name Myrtille K. Collection d'Arnell-Andréa was born the following year, when she released the EP Autumn's Breath for Anton's Death with Jean-Christophe d'Arnell, who came from the punk and then new wave bands D.Stop and Les Visiteurs du Soir. The group unveiled lyrical, ghostly music on it.

The group later grew and blended coldwave and gothic influences with neoclassical instrumentation. VerdamMnis Magazine ranks it among the most original and most significant dark music acts in France. The latest album, A Forest Inside (2023), more electronic, had been reviewed in its pages.

The magazine sends its thoughts to Jean-Christophe d'Arnell, the members of the group and the singer's loved ones.

Unearthed: nineteen tales of archaeological horror gathered by Dan Coxon and Philip Fracassi

Unearthed: New Horror of Ancient Ruins, edited by Dan Coxon and Philip Fracassi, was published by Titan Books on 15 September 2026 (416 pages, paperback and digital). It gathers nineteen previously unpublished stories set in tombs, temples, caves and stone circles, from Stonehenge to the terracotta army. Contributors include Tananarive Due, Christopher Golden, Ai Jiang and Hache Pueyo.

For Jim McLeod of Ginger Nuts of Horror, who gives it 4.5 out of 5, the book is less concerned with curses than with those who own the past, sell it and dig it up.

He singles out four texts: The Bridegroom of Cumae by A.G. Slatter, a Holmes-style investigation featuring a vampire colony in the Sibyl's haunts; AI Cathedral by V. Castro, in which an artificial intelligence company buries what a murdered man had found; The Empire Beneath His Feet by Ai Jiang, set at the terracotta army site. ReHistory by Cavan Scott, presented as the transcript of a BBC report, tells of the purchase of Stonehenge by a rich man who wants to restore it.

Crystal Lake: showrunner Brad Caleb Kane looks back on his series about Pamela and Jason Voorhees

Crystal Lake is an eight-episode series produced by A24 and Peacock that explores the past of Jason and Pamela Voorhees, characters from the Friday the 13th saga. Linda Cardellini plays Pamela. Brad Caleb Kane, showrunner and head writer, explains his choices in an interview with Dread Central.

According to him, the idea of a prequel about Pamela predates his arrival: A24 and Peacock had discussed it with other people, but the project never came together. He points out that Pamela is seen for only ten minutes at the end of the first film, yet her presence weighs on the entire franchise. Television makes it possible to spend more time with a character.

He also comments on the scene in which Pamela, exhausted, falls asleep while bathing Jason. Kane sees in it the risks of motherhood and the responsibilities that are hard to gauge. He wanted Pamela to carry a guilt that Elias could exploit. That character, tied to the Bellflower company, is also reinvented.

Tom Roberts: his solo piano score for Nosferatu reissued by Rivermont Records

Pittsburgh pianist Tom Roberts has his score for the 1922 Nosferatu reissued on CD and vinyl by Rivermont Records. It was first released in 2025.

The Pittsburgh Silent Film Society commissioned it for an anniversary screening on March 4, 2022, marking the film's hundredth year. Roberts, who has also written arrangements for Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, chose not to write horror music. His solo piano score draws on German Romanticism (Schumann, Schubert, Brahms) and on traditional Romanian and Romani music. For certain scenes, he adapted two arrangements by the ensemble Taraf de Haïdouks.

He first conceived the whole for orchestra, away from the piano, then reduced it following Liszt's method for his Beethoven transcriptions. “I wanted to make it human,” he says.

Rivermont Records was founded in 2003 by pianist and musicologist Bryan Wright. The label is devoted to ragtime, jazz and “hot dance.”
