Dark Side Cowboys releases Absolution & Restoration, its fifteenth album, dedicated to Johann Strauss

Swedish band Dark Side Cowboys released Absolution & Restoration on 23 October, its fifteenth studio album, following Beyond (2024). The eleven tracks keep the band's signature gothic western atmosphere, this time with an approach closer to nordic noir storytelling. The record was written, arranged, performed, mixed and produced by the band over three years, then mastered by Hansa at Hit-verksta'n. The band describes the songs as stripped-down, often slow, but dynamic and at times suddenly grandiose.

The album is available digitally and as a limited digipak CD with a 12-page lyric booklet. Scavenger Song, unveiled in April, features vocals by Johann Strauss (Scavenger John) and Stephanie Mazor (Soothsayer Mazor). Strauss, who died on 1 March 2026, also appears in the chorus of Stick to Your Guns, and the album is dedicated to his memory. Andreas Wandegren (VigilAnte) had played with him in Morlocks. The other guests are singers Lewina Colt, Izzy Belle and J West, violinist Juliette Corbin and cellist The Witchdoctor.

The band is also releasing a 20-page comic, The Old Artifact, hand-drawn by Sebastian Ericson of Excess Graphix. It follows The Undertaker and Gunslinger as they search for an amulet hidden by Scavenger John. It is sold separately or in a bundle with the album.

Rymdverket releases Numb and begins a collaboration with poet Patric Hamsch Furudal

Swedish synthpop duo Rymdverket released the single Numb on 23 October 2026, along with Enfant Adulte and its instrumental version, two tracks credited to Hamsch & Rymdverket. These releases open a collaboration with Swedish poet and artist Patric Hamsch Furudal.

Rymdverket brings together Henric Byström and Linda Ganters, who formed it in Karlstad in 2024. Their first album, Some Kind of Start, came out in August 2025. The band presents Numb as one of its most danceable songs, with a four-on-the-floor beat, acid-style synth lines and layered vocal harmonies. Linda Ganters leaves her usual low register for a higher one. The lyrics are about freeing oneself from the past and leaving old patterns behind.

Enfant Adulte is the first of four long pieces built around Furudal's autobiographical poetry, intended as the basis for a stage show. The track combines spoken poetry with electronic compositions, with no verse-chorus structure. Numb, like two other upcoming songs, serves as a musical bridge between the four parts, with English lyrics written by Furudal. “It required a completely different approach to composition, where the music had to serve the story rather than take center stage,” explains Henric Byström.

Reptil Ibérico Emissões stages domestic folk horror in the Permafrost video

Reptil Ibérico Emissões is the project of Miguel Branco, based near Lisbon. He has just unveiled a video for Permafrost, a single from his album Obsidian, which features seven compositions and blends gothic rock, post-punk, ancient mythology and cosmic horror.

The song is inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. Archaeology, geology, forgotten cultures and the resurrection of ancient gods feed Branco's interest in the worlds buried beneath our own. The video, made by hand, shows figures masked as animals gathered around a picnic table, before an increasingly strange dance at dusk. According to Post-Punk.com, it evokes The Blair Witch Project, John Carpenter, The Wicker Man and Midsommar, with a good dose of humor.

Branco has released music under the Reptil identity since 2020, in Portuguese and English. His alter ego Hiena explores horror-inspired material, while Reptil cultivates the romantic desolation of gothic rock, with The Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, Lycia, The Sound and The Chameleons, as well as The Soft Moon, Ritual Howls and Bleib Modern, as influences. “I've been making music for a long time, in bands and alone, but I'm now closer to the sound I'm looking for, a blend of old and new,” he says.

Virgin Birth puts exhaustion on screen with The Dead End

Louisville, Kentucky trio VIRGIN BIRTH, who play industrial punk, have released a video for “The Dead End”, the title track of their new six-track EP. The video is directed by Phillip Olympia, a member of the band.

The song revolves around exhaustion, isolation and anxiety, whereas earlier releases dealt more with the collapse of the world. Post-Punk.com hears a rhythm close to The Prodigy and guitars reminiscent of Ministry's Stigmata.

The largely monochrome video layers faces, clouds, blurred concert footage and archive gymnastics sessions.

VIRGIN BIRTH brings together Phillip Olympia (vocals, synthesizers, drum machines), Jake Miller (guitars, synthesizers) and Matt Haas (bass). All three have a background in punk and indie rock bands, and share a taste for 1980s and 1990s industrial.

The images collide and recombine into a visual history of outdated visions of the future. According to Flint, they do not explain the song, they take it somewhere else.

Luct Melod releases Sync Loss, a four-track EP on vinyl and digital. It is the first release from the newly launched label Chrestomath Records, and the artist's first on the imprint. The project is that of Daymon Kiliman, based in Illinois, who makes dark music influenced by post-industrial and EBM.

The EP opens with Sync Level Lost, which pairs classic EBM rhythms with modern production and sparse vocals. Barbaric Sympathy slows the tempo with textured rhythms, synthetic choirs and a rolling bassline. Empty Entreaties picks the pace back up, set against mechanical movement. Recalibrate R-13.145 closes the record by blending electro swing with cold EBM rhythms.

The vinyl is limited to 250 copies on 180 grams, pressed by Smashed Plastic in Chicago. It is distributed mainly through record stores in Illinois and the Midwest, with a small number of copies sold online. The digital release is available on Bandcamp and on Subvert, a cooperative marketplace owned by artists and labels. The artist states that no generative AI was used for the music or the artwork.

chest. releases Happy, Broken., a debut album blending post-punk, industrial and danceable rhythms

Paris band chest. releases Happy, Broken., its debut album, on Howlin' Banana, Exag' and À Tant Rêver Du Roi. Formed in 2022 by five musicians who met and all worked at the Le Supersonic venue in Paris, it had released the EP All Good Things End in 2025. Its name comes from the chorus of Self Sabotage, a track from that EP. The full stop, however, remains unexplained, even to guitarist Alexis Plateroti: lots of band logos were in capitals. The band was also ranked in the NME 100 last year.

The record has ten tracks averaging about 3 minutes 30. The band's post-punk is combined here with industrial, almost stoner passages and more danceable but fairly dark electronic rhythms, a direction already hinted at on Aceta, which closed the EP. Eliott's vocals become more rallying, with more solemn sections where they were previously declamatory.

According to Gonzai, the album is a success and can be listened to in one sitting. The magazine hears echoes of Shame, Working Men's Club, Fontaines D.C. and Ditz.

Cigno turns Bertinotti into a hero of the absurd in Lotta Bertinotti!

Cigno releases the single Lotta Bertinotti!, available on digital platforms since Friday 23 October. The track sits between post-punk and new wave, with a tight rhythm section, distorted guitars and a filtered voice.

At the center of the song, the former politician and trade unionist Bertinotti becomes a symbolic name, suspended between nostalgia, farce and disenchantment. Amid union struggles, esodati and the ghosts of a radical chic left, he turns into a superhero of the absurd, an ideological fetish and a mythological creature born of the fears and unresolved desires of the Italian left.

Behind the irony, the song asks how to start over after a defeat, turning political memory into hallucinated, visionary sonic material. The single announces the album Kabarett Holocaust, expected on 22 January 2027.

Antwerp's ILA releases Motherland, its second album

Antwerp band ILA released their second album, Motherland, on October 9, 2026, following Ayna in 2024. They play alternative rock with post-punk leanings. Louder Than War gives it 4.5 out of 5.

Produced by Mikko Gordon, who has worked with The Smile, IDLES, Arcade Fire and Beck, it is the first record written as a four-piece: singer Ilayda Cicek, Sam Smeets on bass, Cas Kinnaer on drums and Stynen on guitar. Smeets and Stynen drove most of the music, which allowed Cicek to concentrate on the lyrics. She wrote about half of them during a stay in Turkey, and came back with a suitcase full of guitar demos that the band developed in the studio.

The eleven tracks alternate between abrasive passages and more atmospheric moods. The first single, “Sorry”, is the track the critic singles out above all others. “In Blue” blends 1980s electronics with trip-hop touches, while “Deniz” and the title track explore more experimental textures.

Ryū Murakami, author of the horror novel Audition, dies at 74

Japanese writer Ryū Murakami died at home on 17 October, aged 74. The news, reported by The Guardian, comes from his Japanese publisher, Gentosha. Murakami wrote more than forty novels and short story collections.

Among them, Audition is his most popular book with horror fans. The novel follows a lonely film producer who stages a fake casting call to find a companion, with serious consequences. Takashi Miike adapted it in 2000 into a film of the same name, which became a cult classic. Eihi Shiina plays Asami, a character Dread Central describes as more victim than villain, a betrayed woman who dispenses what she sees as justice to violent men who lie to her or take advantage of her. The site notes that, more than twenty years later, audiences still cite her as a symbol of female rage.

Ken Russell's The Devils returns in a restored, uncensored version

The Devils, Ken Russell's film, returns to cinemas in a restored, uncensored version, for a limited run under the banner of Warner Bros. and its Clockwork division. Condemned in 1971 for its themes deemed blasphemous, its long nude scenes and its depictions of sadomasochistic torture, the film is presented by ScreenAnarchy as far more than mere provocation.

The story follows Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed), a 17th-century Catholic priest in Loudun who cannot keep his vow of celibacy. When he opposes the demolition of the city walls, he becomes the target of a political persecution orchestrated around Cardinal Richelieu (Christopher Logue). The accusation of witchcraft rests on the visions of Sister Jeanne of the Angels (Vanessa Redgrave), a mother superior obsessed with him.

Russell, already behind Altered States, Tommy and Women in Love, follows the historical record of the Loudun possession closely.
