Cabaret Voltaire: Code, the 1987 album, returns remastered on Mute

Mute is releasing a remastered reissue of Code, Cabaret Voltaire's eighth studio album, which came out in 1987 and has been out of print for many years. It arrives on limited-edition marbled “CODIFIED” vinyl, as a triple CD and digitally. The previously unpublished liner notes look back at the production and legacy of the record.

The triple CD brings together the original album and two discs of period remixes, completed by unreleased versions found in the archives. Code marks the arrival of Richard H. Kirk and Stephen Mallinder at EMI, with more comfortable budgets. It is their best-selling record: “Don't Argue” and “Here To Go” both entered the official UK singles chart.

The album was recorded at Western Works in Sheffield, with saxophonist Simeon Lister, bassist Mark Brydon (Chakk) and Bill Nelson (Be-Bop Deluxe) as guests. Adrian Sherwood worked on pre-production, then the mixing took place at Red Bus in London. Mallinder sees it as a political record that never had to announce itself as such, in a world tipping towards technology.

The remastering is by Denis Blackman, who has mastered or remastered all of the band's albums for more than twenty years. The work began in 2019 with Kirk, then was completed from his notes, in consultation with Mallinder and Kirk's estate.

Zeu, goth from Pennsylvania, doubles down with Blind Among the Rust and Beyond Life and Death

Zeu, alias of Matthew Zedolik from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, is releasing two singles, “Blind Among the Rust” and “Beyond Life and Death”, on Everything Evaporated. They follow the album “Existor”, released in July. Zedolik writes, plays, records and produces everything himself.

He places his approach somewhere between 1980s Springsteen, Billy Idol, Depeche Mode and Sisters of Mercy. Post-Punk.com's review instead hears a cross between Tom Waits and The Gun Club, with skeletal guitar in the manner of Rowland S. Howard and a theatrical sense close to Foetus. The echoing guitars evoke desert roads, the synths add an industrial chill, and the raspy vocals rest on a garage rock foundation.

His background explains the mix: teenage metal bands, The Ordinals on bass, American Buffalo Ghost on guitar, then recording studies in New York.

The Machine in the Garden continues its return with “The Beginning of All Things”

The darkwave and ethereal goth duo The Machine in the Garden, made up of Roger Fracé and Summer Bowman, released the single “The Beginning of All Things” on October 9. It follows “Space-Time”, released in May, the band's first new track in six years.

The lyrics, which include “We're on our path to nowhere” and “Blindly we fly / Blindly we fail”, deal with humanity's loneliness in the universe as it damages its own planet while searching for answers in space. The cover art extends that theme: it uses “A Sliver of Earth”, the sunlit horizon of the Earth in the darkness of space, photographed by the Artemis II mission in April.

The single, in its “single edit” version, is available on Bandcamp at a pay-what-you-want price. These two tracks are the band's first new music since the album Places in Between, released in 2020.

Poems For Dead People and Intertitle team up on “There Are Spiders In My Dreams”

Poems For Dead People and Intertitle have joined forces on “There Are Spiders In My Dreams”, a track that blends post-punk, darkwave and experimental electronics. Writer and singer Ryan Kent lays a dark spoken word performance over Intertitle's electronic structures.

The song opens with a spacious synthesizer wash and a spoken voice, before a nervous guitar and a driving drum part come in. The rhythm keeps a post-punk regularity from start to finish, while the guitars move between surges in intensity, notably around the second minute, and more restrained passages.

The synthesizers build a dreamlike atmosphere in tune with the text, which deals with dreams, memory and unease. The voice keeps describing its visions right into the final fade-out, where the vintage-sounding keyboards and the rhythm section gradually disappear.

THIEF unveils the video for Poison Drum, taken from Sermons from the Pit

THIEF, the Los Angeles-based dark electronic project of Dylan Neal, released the single and video “Poison Drum” on October 8. The track follows “Moon and Kill” and announces the album “Sermons from the Pit”, due on November 27 via Prophecy Productions.

Neal describes the piece as “the ninth stratum of the pit”, referring to the Sanskrit concept of nirveda, detachment and disillusionment with the world's ambitions. He uses a technique he calls “cathedral clipping”: a sound, here a synthesizer, first goes through a short convolution reverb, then is saturated and re-amplified until obliteration. Neal recorded and mixed the album himself, with mastering handled by John Greenham.

“Sermons from the Pit” has eleven tracks and will be released as a 48-page bound artbook with two CDs and bonus tracks, on bone-colored splatter gatefold vinyl pressed in 250 copies, and on black vinyl.

Neal was the dulcimer player of the band BOTANIST. Since 2016, THIEF has released “Thieves Hymn in D Minor”, “Map of Lost Keys” and “The 16 Deaths of My Master”. He defines his music as “Dungeon Pop”: trip-hop, jungle and drum'n'bass, industrial textures and extreme distortion.

Echoes of the pioneers

Duet Emmo, Or So It Seems: the one-off album born in a London church

Duet Emmo only ever released one album, “Or So It Seems”, which came out in 1983 to indifference. The trio brings together Daniel Miller, founder of Mute, and Graham Lewis and Bruce Gilbert, founding members of Wire. The Quietus spoke to them about the history of this cult record.

The album was recorded in two winter sessions at Blackwing Studios, housed in the former All Hallows church in Southwark, built in 1879 and largely destroyed during the Blitz. Engineer Eric Radcliffe, a former laser applications researcher, turned it into a cutting-edge studio. With his protégé John Fryer, he forged close ties with Mute and 4AD. Depeche Mode, My Bloody Valentine, Pixies, Stereolab and Nine Inch Nails recorded landmark albums there.

Conceived as a pure studio project, “Or So It Seems” offers anxious industrial sound design and pulsing electronics. It remained a footnote in its makers' discographies, but its reputation has grown through successive waves of interest in foundational post-punk and industrial. Mute reissued it in 2022.

Normal Bias returns with Soft Power, first taste of Ways of Keeping Clean

The EBM and synthpop duo Normal Bias released the single and video “Soft Power” on October 6. It is their first track since the album “Kingdom Come” (2024). It paves the way for “Ways of Keeping Clean”, planned for 2027 on DKA Records.

The song rests on hard basslines and layered synths. Singer Matt Weiner adopts a style the band calls “Hutchence-meets-Gahan”. The video, directed by Logan Devlin, mixes live-action footage with stop-motion animation, in 16-bit desert landscapes treated in a VHS style. Chris C performs amid melting clocks and faceless eyes.

The band presents the song as a reaction to the addiction to multimedia propaganda content, which it says feeds the worst instincts of leaders and institutions.

Normal Bias brings together Matt Weiner and Chris C, between New York and Atlanta. The duo describes its project as “a pump and dump scam” that plunders the bloodiest tracks from decades of electronic music. “Kingdom Come” was released via DKA and Synthicide.

Pygmy Children reissues Malignant and Facedown in Malignant: Redux

Baltimore electro-industrial duo Pygmy Children released “Malignant: Redux” on October 2 via Re:Mission Entertainment. The record revisits their debut album “Malignant” (1994) and the EP “Facedown” (1993). The recordings, made at Hit and Run Studios in Rockville (Maryland) with engineer Steve Carr, receive their first official remastering, by Jeff Mortimer of JM Mastering. Brian Roper did the cover art.

Brothers Pete and Brian Roper speak frankly of a raw sound, of novices who wanted something multilayered and frenzied, with synths pushed until the voices gave out and several drum tracks playing at once.

The digital edition gathers both releases in sixteen tracks. The digipak CD, limited to 100 copies, contains “Malignant” plus “Fear”, the B-side of “Facedown”. A box set of three signed CDs, limited to 25 copies and reserved for shipments within the United States, also exists.

For Wes Turner, the label's founder, the band shaped his taste for dark electronic music in the 1990s. The duo returned in 2025 with “Coincidental Strategies” and is preparing a fifth album, “Into The Silence”, led by the single “Proof in Lies”.

CauseNation releases “World In Decay - The Final Chapter” on DressCode Black

The Belgian electro project CauseNation, founded in 2015 by Ivan Heyligen (aka Vain Sacrosanct), is releasing its new album “World In Decay - The Final Chapter”. After a first EP in 2018 and a debut album in 2021 on Wool-E Discs, a label that no longer exists, the band has found a home at DressCode Black, the Antwerp label of Frederik Strobbe, known for his project Darkvolt. For now, the record is only available digitally.

The reviewer hears raw, dark and cold electro that sometimes makes room for a more melodic futurepop approach, as on “Not Alone” or the rousing chorus of “Saviour”. “Nowhere To Hide”, with an echo of Klinik, and “Messiah” are harder and aimed at dark electro fans.

“Obscene” belongs to endzeit electro, the title track plunges into a horror atmosphere over a modern EBM beat, “Overload Obsession” combines the Canadian and Belgian schools, and “So Complete” recalls Dance Or Die. “Far Away” closes the album with a nod to crossover electro. This diversity makes the record more accessible without scattering it. It can be streamed on Bandcamp.

The AXIOM Divide releases its first album, Halo Effect

Re:Mission Entertainment is releasing “Halo Effect”, the first full-length album from goth and industrial band The AXIOM Divide. The record is available on Bandcamp digitally and on CD. It was mastered by Rob Roberson (The Static Temple, Kevorkian Death Cycle).

Its eleven tracks follow a ritual, myth-like structure, in which cinematic choral and lyrical passages meet heavy industrial rhythms. The band sees it as an exploration of love as both refuge and battlefield, and of the emotional barriers raised by trials and broken promises. Rodney Orpheus (The Cassandra Complex) provided additional production. The album also includes a cover of “Fortress Around Your Heart”, written by Sting.

It follows “The Halls of Amenti: Remixes”, released on August 28, and includes “Generations”, the band's first single, released in March 2022.

The AXIOM Divide began as a side project of singer and writer Jay Tye (Soil & Eclipse). He is joined by producer and keyboardist Brent Heinze (Probe 7, Darling Kandie).

Olen'k returns with Moths, eight years after Architextures

Olen'k releases Moths on October 9, 2026, on its own label, eight years after Architextures. The band, led since its beginnings by founder Manuel Costa, blends synth-pop, new wave and touches of trip hop, with coldwave and dark 1980s music still present in its DNA.

The lineup has been reshaped around Costa and Elise Montastier-Costa on vocals: Alex Morlay and Emmanuel Lajudie on drums, Mangane Ousseynou on vocals and additional instrumentation, and Michel Laporte, whose bluesy voice can be heard on “Gospel Song”. After several studio experiences guided by Rémy Pelleschi (Mlada Fronta), Olen'k wanted to shape its sound itself, with Christophe “Toto” Marraud (Sonic Studio). David Mascunan handled the mastering.

According to Obsküre's review, the record comes closer to the band's live energy and highlights its organic side, without giving up the emotional weight beneath the synthesizer sheen. The tracks mentioned include “Reformation” as the opener, “Partition”, “Vertigo” (with lyrics by the late Laurent Samie), “Thorn”, “The Maze” and the bonus instrumental “Enola”.

Moths is dedicated to Jean-Pierre Raillat (Enigma) and Laurent Samie. The visual work is by Lionel Londeix.

Beyond the music

Ultravox finally gets an authorized biography, written by Richard Evans

Omnibus Press published “Looking Backwards Towards the Future: The Story of Ultravox” on October 8, the first authorized biography of the British band. Richard Evans, already the author of “Listening to the Music the Machines Make: Inventing Electronic Pop 1978-1983”, wrote this 400-page hardback, with a foreword by Moby. He draws on the direct cooperation of the band members, their circle, their labels and their management.

The story begins in London in 1974, when the group is called Tiger Lily before becoming Ultravox! under the direction of John Foxx. Experimental art-rock at first, the band blends guitars, synthesizers and post-punk influences, working with producers such as Brian Eno, Steve Lillywhite and Conny Plank. Midge Ure's arrival in 1979 in place of Foxx precedes “Vienna”, which reached number two on the UK charts in 1980. Between 1980 and 1986, Ultravox placed seven albums in the Top 10 and seventeen singles in the Top 40 in the United Kingdom.

Interviewed by Side-Line, Evans explains that he wanted to give the band back its role as a pioneer, which in his view was never fully recognized: too rock for electronic purists, too electronic for the rock audience. He also stresses Systems Of Romance (1978, with Conny Plank) and the equality that marked the group with Ure, whereas the first era was mainly Foxx's project.

Pan's Labyrinth returns in 3D for its 20th anniversary, with no AI according to Guillermo del Toro

Twenty years after its release, Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth is back in theaters, and in three dimensions for the first time. The anniversary re-release, backed by Cineverse and Fathom Entertainment, began on October 8 in a selection of theaters before expanding nationwide on October 9. It also offers new 4K and HDR presentations.

Del Toro followed the project closely. According to him, the conversion took well over a year and involved more than 1,300 artists working frame by frame, a figure he does not elaborate on. He states that no artificial intelligence was involved: “Absolutely no goddamn AI,” he says, with every element made by hand. The higher cost of this approach does not deter him: “I don't care.” Aaron Parry of SDFX Studios supervised the conversion. Some theaters are also screening the film with Barco's laser and HDR systems.

The 3D is used selectively, mostly in the fantasy sequences, as the story slips from Francoist Spain into the underworld ruled by the faun. Del Toro calls it “a true revelation” for those scenes. He also presents the re-release as a statement on how a film should be made, at a time when AI tools are proliferating: what he intends to protect, he says, is “the beauty and redemptive power of art.” Released in 2006, the film won three Oscars.
