Martin Gore releases Cross Whisper, with his daughter on vocals

Martin Gore, founder of Depeche Mode, wrote Cross Whisper with Cliff Damavandi, an artist and lyricist. The vocals are performed by Gore’s daughter. The song is out on Mute.

The starting point is a conversation between friends about unexplained phenomena. Gore recounts that birds appear when people close to him die. One day a bird tapped insistently against the window of his studio; two days later, he learned of the death of a close friend. Moved by the story, Damavandi wrote the lyrics, which Gore then set to music.

The track opens with whispered voices, gradually followed by Gore’s synthesizers. The whispering returns in waves, accompanied by a hammering that recalls the bird at the studio.

The song has been remixed by ANNA, Regis, Vera Grace, Boothnavy and Pye Corner Audio (Martin Jenkins). The 12-inch Cross Whisper, catalogue number 12MUTE705, comes out on vinyl on Mute on 4 December 2026, with the original version and these five remixes. The visualizer was filmed in Japan and England by Luca Bailey.

Aliens Corporation delivers Unfriendly Territories, Vol. 1, a dark synthpop EP

Aliens Corporation is an independent dark synthpop band with industrial elements, citing Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk and NIN among its influences. It released its first EP, Closer to the Asteroids, in 2023.

On 25 September it put out Unfriendly Territories, Vol. 1, the first part of a project whose second part is planned for 2027. The title refers to the hostile territories where everyone has found themselves at some point, through their own shortcomings, difficult moments or outside demands, and which also push us to adapt and surpass ourselves.

The four tracks: We are Aliens blends electronic and industrial sounds over a frenetic rhythm, Altered moods has an almost schizophrenic sound that invites turning frustration into dance. A pig from Cassiopeia and Psychedelic day at UMMO share their conceptual references: the first plays on roughness and friction, the second slowly descends toward a certain calm.

Bleached Cross confronts grief and faith on Wrath, its third album

Wrath is the third album by Bleached Cross, a band from Illinois. Post-punk meets darkwave, industrial, noise-rock and, in bursts, black metal-tinged hardcore. The themes are grief, guilt and a crisis of faith.

The record opens with Thorn Crown, between spectral synthesizers and distant voices. Season Of The Witch takes the form of a clandestine ritual, while Blood Moon sets the desire for eternity over clearer melodies. In Tomb, two voices answer each other, and the arrival of Harlee Young brings a more fragile counterpoint. Torment tips into dissonant fury while keeping the post-punk rhythm. Lingering Souls and Requiem pull toward electronic melancholy, and The Dark, the penultimate track, sets pain against the silence of God.

For OndaRock, which reviews it, the conflict between the need for forgiveness and the impossibility of granting it to oneself forms the heart of the record.

DIAF releases AURA, third synthpop album with Bavarian lyrics

Coming from the Bavarian hinterland, DIAF releases AURA, its third album, on House of Inkantation. The record pairs expansive synthpop with lyrics in Bavarian.

It has ten tracks, all written, performed and produced by DIAF himself. It features big choirs, rhythmic percussion and bright melodies. The magazine Orkus, which devotes a review by Jan Schütz (Meersein) to it, sees a reworking of the Neue Deutsche Welle that escapes the clichés of the countryside. Orkus also interviews DIAF in its October-November issue.

Sheeba exp. follows trauma from thought to body on Soliloquy // A Body Knows

Soliloquy // A Body Knows, an instrumental industrial album by Sheeba exp., is illustrated by Fabrizio Nisi. It unfolds in two parts and follows the course of an emotional disturbance, from thought to the nervous system. Rough electronics render its symptoms, while melodic passages answer the feeling of dehumanization.

The record begins with a ticking mixed with a steam engine, which stops, restarts, stops again. Drowned voices and children’s screams on a roller coaster evoke memories that loop endlessly. Paradise Lost starts on piano before a deluge of rhythms breaks it; Again, and again, and again speeds up, then Respite offers an ambient pause at the centre of the album. Rupture opens the most industrial sequence, with percussion that suggests gunshots and then bombs. In Wounded Ground, the rhythms pass from one speaker to the other until distorted vocalizations, which reviewer Richard Allen of A Closer Listen compares to Skinny Puppy. Void Talk closes the album on a thin but real consolation.

London Plane dissects the ordinary fanatic in the NATION NATION video

New York sextet London Plane unveils the video for NATION NATION, a post-punk song of about three minutes produced by Carlos Dengler, a former member of Interpol. It is his first production work for another artist. The track appears on the band’s third album, Villains Heroes Ghosts, due in early 2027 on Declared Goods. The two previous ones are New York Howl (2018) and Bright Black (2022).

Singer David Mosey explains that the song is sung from the point of view of the sycophant, the idiot turned into a weapon. According to him, the band allowed itself to be absurd, and Dengler encouraged its eccentric, even demented side.

The video, directed by Zane Rizvi-Riemer and Max Burbey, follows two ordinary-looking men who knock on doors like political canvassers or missionaries. Their banality gradually gives way to an authoritarian recruitment operation, shot in an expressionist, Soviet-inspired imagery, with close-ups of faces and hands handing out pills. The clip also draws on Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell.

The video sets the dancing in an operating theatre, with living televisions and surgical procedures that are only suggested.

The label’s presentation text describes Recto/Verso as the inflow and outflow of a single field, a breathing system. Visitor is presented as sent through different systems to bring back sonic material, drawn from environments subject to other pressures and other laws.

Erk Aicrag of Hocico: from Rabia Sorda to MANIC, creating without boundaries

In an interview published by Side-Line, Erk Aicrag, the voice of Hocico, describes an activity that extends beyond the band. With Rabia Sorda, he writes books and poetry and performs spoken word. He also composes soundtracks, plays with Eric13 in Chuntata Boys, and developed the dance-theatre piece “The Sound of Bodies Breaking” with Giulia Mandelli.

His new project, MANIC, is led with Patrick Heaney. The first single, “Into The Static”, is in preparation. He lets the idea choose its own form: phrases, sounds or sensations accumulate in a bank of fragments, some of which wait years before finding their place.

On “Unseen Horror Scenes”, he explains that his anger has become less geographical. It first came from Mexico City, its violence and its inequalities. It now targets systems and human behavior, notably digital life. He also feels the craft can turn into a formula: screaming because “Hocico screams” does not interest him, and for him intensity no longer comes through volume.

Modiste, Louisville synthpop trio, on its formation and debut album

In an interview with River Atkinson for ReGen Magazine, the three members of Modiste, a synthpop band from Louisville, look back on the birth of the project and on their debut album, Nothing More Than a Machine. The trio brings together singer Sydney Sleadd, Dennis Stein and Kyle Stallings.

The band was born in part from the Louisville Rock Lottery, organized by Craig Pfunder (VHS or Beta): 25 musicians from local bands are split by random draw into teams of five, write three songs in eight hours and play them that same evening. Sydney Sleadd and Dennis Stein ended up on the same team in January 2025. With no shared availability to keep the whole lineup together, they started their own project. Kyle Stallings, Stein's colleague in the art department of the same company, joined them. He has been producing electronic music since around 2008.

The band rehearses every Tuesday evening, three to four hours at a minimum, and splits the visual duties: graphics, visuals, lighting. Sydney Sleadd explains that the album's themes, blind love, disillusionment and relapse, are personal to her, with some songs confessional and others inspired by her reading.

Lustmord, Trinity: a dark ambient album built on the sites of the first nuclear test

Side-Line has published a review of Trinity, a dark ambient album by Lustmord released in 2020. Brian Williams self-released it on Bandcamp on October 2, 2020, as a digital edition in six pieces.

The record draws on field recordings made at Los Alamos National Laboratory and at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, places tied to the first atomic bomb test. It also incorporates archive material from the laboratory, and the voice of J. Robert Oppenheimer appears in Twilight: Los Alamos. Trinity was originally commissioned by the Unsound Festival in 2012, then developed into the album.

Ant-Zen later released Trinity as a limited CD with a 48-page hardbound book, now sold out at the source.

The critic Karo Kratochwil stresses the refusal of spectacle: the music stays slow, stripped back and tightly controlled, with low frequencies beneath the surface, distant resonances and archive voices left unstaged. In his view, the album works on shock rather than on the scream. The pieces follow a path from Twilight: Los Alamos to A New Dawn: Hiroshima, passing through Oak Ridge, Dusk: White Sands, Journey of the Dead Man and Surface Zero.

Dans la tête des tueurs en série: the immersive exhibition settles into the Spectrum

The exhibition Mind of a Serial Killer: the experience, titled Dans la tête des tueurs en série : l’expo immersive in French, stops in the country for the first time, on the ground floor of a recent skyscraper, on the site of the former Spectrum. It is produced by Fever and Exhibition Hub, with host Annie-Soleil Proteau as ambassador. The organizers stress its educational aim: it neither trivializes nor glorifies the killers’ acts.

The route has about twenty rooms and lasts 90 to 120 minutes. The first is devoted to the history of forensic profiling, with tools used by FBI investigators. Visitors move from room to room through curtains of plastic slats, can sit down, touch almost everything and take photos in reconstructed sets. These were designed notably by makeup artist Rémy Couture and set designer Jordan “Yor Devil” St-Louis.

References to cinema abound: the exhibition points to Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Silence of the Lambs, Deranged (1974) and season 3 of the series Monster. A virtual reality sequence of about fifteen minutes puts the visitor alongside an FBI inspector collecting clues. According to Horreur Québec, the exhibition also pays tribute to the memory of the victims.
